Elisabeth Sparkle is a seasoned movie star who first comes to our attention in The Substance when her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame gradually fades. Her fame, which was once surrounded by enthusiastic followers and boisterous throngs, is now limited to the plodding movements of cleaning staff and indifferent tourists. Her star begins to fracture, signifying her diminishing brilliance.
