Dextran is a branched polysaccharide with glucose subunits. It is a large molecule that over time cannot leak out of the liposome, which is located inside the vial. Dextran can be tagged with a variety of fluorescent probes. Liposomes encapsulating fluorescent dextran can be used in experiments that require tracking of fluorescently water-soluble cargo.
