Pseudotypes or pseudotype particles are chimeric "viruses" consisting of a surrogate virus core surrounded by a lipid envelope with the surface glycoproteins of another virus, such as HA. By removing the genetic element of the virus being studied and replacing it with a suitable reporter, viruses, especially highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI, e.g. H5N1, H7N1), can be studied in this safer, single cycle system.
